Rode SVM for DSLR Video October 13, 2009
Reviewer: Scott B. from Scottsdale, AZ United States
The Rode SVM is probably one of the best mics in the price category to add external sound to your DSLR video (Canon 5DMkII or 7D for instance). The onboard mics on most DSLRs are mono and are going to pick up lens IS or camera handling noise. The SVM has a great stereo sound field and really enhances the sound on my 5DmkII while eliminating handling and IS noise. I've had the SVM for about 9 months and so far it has proven to be robust and well built. It's powered by a 9 volt battery and unless you're shooting 10 hours a day, one battery will last for months. At this price range the Rode SVM (or Rode Video Mic- mono shotgun) are about the best you can get to augment/replace your in-camera mic. I give it 4 stars- if it was just a bit more compact I would give it 5.
